Mohawks shut Athletics down in 3rd period for win

ST. CATHARINES – The Elora Mohawks held the St. Catharines Athletics to a single goal in the third period on their way to scoring an 11-6 victory Sunday at the Canada Summer Games arena.

The victory gives Elora a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinal playoff series.

St. Catharines led 3-2 at the end of the first period and scored first in the second period before the Mohawks netted four in a row to grab the lead. Elora led 6-5 at the end of the second and added five more goals in the third.

Brett Harrison had a hat trick for the Mohawks while Jayden Bushey and Sam Dramnitzke scored twice apiece. Getting single goals were Jabe Verbeek, Ethen Wellings, Tobias Wilson and goalkeeper Cecil Jacobs. Wellings had four assists while Dramnitzke had three, Jabe Verbeek and Nick Aitchison had two apiece and Bushey, Brinley Wilson, Tobias Wilson, Jonah White and Matt Allen each had one assist.

Max Brook collected a pair of goals for St. Catharines while Ryan Andrews, Christian Lefeuvre, Ian Kohut and Justin Porga also scored.

The Mohawks outshot the Athletics 58-37 and both teams went 1-for-5 on their power plays.

Jacobs had 31 saves to get the win in the Elora net while Mike Napoli took the loss. He had 44 saves in the St. Catharines net while Connor Waller had three saves.

Third game of the series is set for Friday at 7 p.m. at the Elora Community Centre.
