Mohawks silence Red Devils to clinch playoff berth

ELORA – The Elora Mohawks held the Wallaceburg Red Devils scoreless for the second half of the game to collect an 8-4 victory in Ontario junior B lacrosse league play Saturday night at the Elora and District Community Centre.

The victory clinched a playoff berth for the defending national champion Mohawks.

Two goals in the opening minute of the second period gave Elora its first lead of the game at 4-3, but Wallaceburg tied it up with what would be its last goal of the contest at 7:18. The Mohawks scored three times later in the period and netted the lone goal of the third to complete the scoring.

Wallaceburg had led 3-2 at the end of the first period and the Mohawks were ahead 7-4 at the end of the second.

Hyatt Welsh connected for a hat trick for the Mohawks while single goals were added by Sam Dramnitzke, Tyler Healey, Ryan Mueller, Travis Weber and Jonah White. Dramnitzke set up three of the goals while Trent Spear and White each had two assists and netminder Ryan Fitzgerald, Mueller, Owen Ristov, Dean Sealey and Welsh each had one.

Landon Allaer, Cam Bechard, Matt Gorry and Aaron Underwood scored the goals for Wallaceburg and assists were awarded to Allaer, Bechard, Evan Dumais, Gorry and goaltender Cecil Jacobs.

The Mohawks outshot the Red Devils 57-27 and went 2-for-9 on their power play while Wallaceburg went 1-for-8.

Fitzgerald had 23 saves to get the win in net for the Mohawks while Jacobs had 49 saves for Wallaceburg.

The win left the Mohawks tied with the Hamilton Bengals for first in the Mid West Division with identical 10-2-1 records.

The Mohawks are to play the Far West-leading Windsor Clippers at Windsor’s Forest Glade arena Sunday at 7 p.m. in the first of three consecutive road games for the Mohawks who finished three straight at home with Saturday’s win.
