Mohawks top Seneca to celebrate with Founders Cup

AKWESASNE, Ont. – The Elora Mohawks are national champions.

The Mohawks claimed the Canadian junior B lacrosse championship for the sixth time in franchise history and first time since 2005 when they defeated the Seneca WarChiefs 9-5 in the gold-medal match of the Founders Cup tournament at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena.

The Mohawks never trailed in the game and secured the victory with three goals in less than a minute and a half early in the third period to turn a two-goal advantage into a five-goal gap.

The Mohawks led 4-1 at the end of the first period, but Seneca closed the margin to a single goal with a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the second period. Elora added another goal less than a minute after Seneca’s second goal of the period to carry a 5-3 advantage into the third period.

Kurtis Woodland had a hat trick for Elora while Zack Cameron and Klayton Hoelscher scored twice each and Cole Spear and Tyrus Rehanek added single goals. Hoelscher, Woodland, Cameron and Rehanek each had two assists while Mason Noble, Hyatt Welsh and A.J. Skirving had one each.

Clay Scanlan connected for three goals for Seneca while Sherman Williams and Tonatiuh Salinas also scored. Assists were awarded to Williams, Emerson Stevens, Andrew Forte, Keelan Seneca and Hoya John.

Landon Kells was the winning netminder for the Mohawks who went 2-for-8 on the power play while Seneca was 1-for-2 on its power play. Troi Benedict was charged with the loss for the WarChiefs.

The Mohawks entered the tournament as the favourites and they won all five of the games they played.

The 2018 championship win goes with title victories in 1964 (as the Guelph Mohawks), 1967, 1968, 1976 and 2005.

The title triumph was also the ninth consecutive championship win by the Ontario representative and the 49th in the 55-year history of the tournament. Three of the wins by non-Ontario teams came in the first eight years of the tournament’s history.
