More of the same as Spartans grab another tennis title

GUELPH – The Centennial Spartans did the usual Friday as they claimed the District 4/10 high school tennis championship for the third consecutive year.

It was also Centennial’s 20th title win in 21 years. The only blemish on the record was 2016 when the Bishop Macdonell Celtics claimed the crown.

The Spartans won this year’s title with 46 points while Bishop Mac was second at 38. They were followed by the Centre Wellington Falcons at 29, Guelph CVI Green Gaels at 26, Lourdes Crusaders at 21, Norwell Varsity Reds at 20, Ross Royals and St. James Lions both at 13, Wellington Heights Wolverines at 12 and Westside Thunder at seven.

Centennial took this year’s title with a single individual title win. However, the Spartans had five silver-medal finishes and two bronze-medal finishes.

Centennial’s Qalib Ladhani won the boys’ singles open division title.

Victoria Herrington of Wellington Heights won the girls’ singles open division crown while Centennial’s Isabel Hyland was second and Centre Wellington’s Christine Lu was third.

Norwell’s pair of Maddie Klaassen and Karlyn Kuepfer won the girls’ doubles high school division crown. Ria Pradhan and Maithili Shende of the Spartans were second and Centre Wellington’s Erin Pettifer and Halle Tovell were third.

Bishop Mac’s Sebastian Trujillo and Luke Yang were triumphant in the boys’ doubles high school division while the runners-up were Centennial’s Matt Haupt and Harry Brown. Peter Kosir and Reuben Joseph of Lourdes were third.

Benedict Gusarovas of Bishop Mac prevailed in boys’ singles B while Centennial’s Joao Farias Soares was second and GCVI’s Avinash Anand third.

James Fuller and Owen Pastorius of St. James took the boys’ doubles B title. Finishing second were Edward Wang and Xin Yi Gao of Centennial while third went to Brogan Furfaro and Robert Pohorilyj of Bishop Mac.

Bishop Mac’s Kara Campolongo and Blake Gill were tops in the mixed doubles high school division while Ashan Jain and Mike Chen of GCVI were second and Victoria He and Ryan Purves of Centennial third.

Isha Saravanan and Nikolina Miceta of GCVI finished first in the girls’ doubles B class while Norwell’s Jadenne Hesselink and Jaclyn Ellison were the runners-up and Centennial’s Allie MacCulloch and Abbey Brunn finished third.

Erika Baldwin of Ross captured the title in the girls’ singles high school class while Kanoka Baba of Centre Wellington was second and Pia van Stokrom of Norwell was third.

The boys’ singles high school division title went to Niren Naidu of GCVI. Bishop Mac’s George Sun was second and Centre Wellington’s Owen Mason third.

Norwell’s Praewa Kiatsrithanakorn won the girls’ singles B title while Kim Tran of GCVI was second and Moe Aso of Ross placed third.

Kaya Bartlewski and Prabh Gill of St. James were victorious in the mixed doubles B category. They were followed by Bishop Mac’s Claire Atkins and Kieran Malison in second and Zsolt Kormendi and Josan Tekle of Lourdes in third.

Top finishers in the tournament advance to the CWOSSA championship tournament Friday at the Northfield Racquet Club in Waterloo.
