Mount Forest breaks into win column in North final

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots bounced back from losses in the opening two games of their Provincial Junior Hockey League North Conference final with a 5-2 victory over the Stayner Siskins Tuesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Stayner scored first in the game, but the host Patriots responded with four consecutive goals to take control.

After a scoreless first period, Samuel Vachon tallied 1:33 into the second for Stayner.

However, Jordan Leitch pulled Mount Forest even with a goal 24 seconds later and Elijah Brahaney and Caleb Cribbin connected 31 seconds apart with the first power-play goals of the series for the Patriots to give them a 3-1 lead before the second was seven and a half minutes old.

Dylan Szymanowski added the fourth goal in Mount Forest’s scoring run 56 seconds into the period.

Damen Boose added a power-play goal for Stayner, his 20th goal of the playoffs, with 7:42 to go in regulation time, but Brody Leblanc completed the scoring on an unassisted effort into an empty net with 1:06 to play. That goal was Leblanc’s 18th of the playoffs.

Leblanc and Szymanowski each had two assists for the Patriots while Charlie Mckenzie, Cribbin and Riley Torrie had one apiece.

Ty Roberts, Christopher Prucha, Gavin Mikaczo and Tyson Bradford each had one assist for Stayner.

The Siskins outshot the Patriots 38-29. Vance Meyer had 36 saves in net for the hosts while Derek Hartley had 24 for Stayner.

Stayner also went 1-for-10 on its power play while Mount Forest went 2-for-6. Both teams have had their power plays shut down during the series as the Patriots are 2-for-19 and Stayner is 2-for-18 with a manpower advantage.

Game 4 is set for Thursday at 8 p.m. at the Stayner Memorial Arena.

Tuesday’s win by the Patriots makes Game 5 of the best-of-seven series a necessity. It’s to go Friday at 8 p.m. at Mount Forest.
