Mount Forest Patriots drop game and series to Stayner

STAYNER – The Mount Forest Patriots saw their Provincial Junior Hockey League season come to an end Sunday at the Stayner Memorial Arena when they were handed a 6-2 setback by the host Stayner Siskins.

The win gave Stayner a 4-2 victory in the best-of-seven North Conference final.

The Patriots yielded five goals in the third period, two into an empty net as they pressed to try to win the game to take the series to its seven-game limit.

Mount Forest shot ahead early with the lone goal of the first period, but Stayner tied it with the only goal of the second. The Siskins gained control of the match with three goals in a span of 4:27 before the third period was seven minutes old.

Brody Leblanc had a goal and an assist for the Patriots while Elijah Brahaney scored the other goal and Cameron Voisin had an assist.

Tyson Bradford had a pair of goals for Stayner while singletons were netted by Cody Marles, Jack Rispin, Cole MacArthur and Deandres DeJesus. Damen Boose assisted on four of the goals while DeJesus had two assists and Marles, Bradford and Trevor Hutchinson had one each.

The Siskins outshot the Patriots 29-28 and both teams were scoreless on their power plays, Mount Forest on six and Stayner on three.

Vance Meyer had 23 saves in goal for Mount Forest while Derek Hartley had 26 for Stayner.

The Siskins advance to the league’s Schmalz Cup Final Four championship tournament at Woodstock May 12 to 14. They’re to be joined by the South Conference champion Wellesley Applejacks, East Conference champion Clarington Eagles and West Conference champion Lakeshore Canadiens.
