Mount Forest Patriots open playoffs with victory

MOUNT FOREST — A pair of goals in the first period sparked the Mount Forest Patriots to a 4-1 victory over the Wingham Ironmen Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex in the opening game of their Provincial Junior Hockey League North Division quarter-final playoff series.

The Patriots led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-1 after the second.

Spencer Holt, Brendon Aitken, Michael Stefanelli and Troy Oakley scored for Mount Forest while Blair Butchart had two assists and Ryley Cribbin, Holt, Aitken and Mitch Betts had one apiece.

Jeremy Ross scored for Wingham with help from Logan Tolton.

Mount Forest outshot Wingham 33-30 and went 1-for-5 on its power play while Wingham was scoreless on three power plays.

Mathieu Oullette was the winning goalie in the Mount Forest net while Alex Metzger was tagged with the loss for Wingham.

Second game of the best-of-seven series is slated for Sunday at Wingham’s Wescast Complex rink. Game time is 1 p.m.

Third game is to go at Mount Forest Wednesday at 8 p.m.
