Mount Forest Patriots post shutout win in playoff opener

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots opened their PJHL playoffs with a 5-0 blanking of the Wingham Ironmen in Pollock Division semifinal play Wednesday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

It was Mount Forest’s first playoff game of the season as the Patriots had a bye in the divisional quarter-finals thanks to finishing atop the division at 32-9-0-1 at the completion of the regular season.

Wingham was fourth at 26-13-2-1 and defeated the fifth-place Kincardine Bulldogs (18-18-5-1) in the divisional quarter-finals, winning the best-of-seven series 4-1.

Wednesday’s game was the first for the Patriots since they wrapped up their regular season with a win over the Kincardine Bulldogs at Kincardine March 5.

The Patriots scored three times in the first period against Wingham and then added their other two goals in a wild third period when the teams combined for 114 minutes in penalties. That penalty-minute total included five 10-minute penalties for inciting an opponent, a pair of fighting majors and 17 head-contact minor penalties. The first two periods had seen a total of 18 minutes in penalties.

Shots on goal were recorded as 17-13 in Mount Forest’s favour and had them scoring on the only two shots taken in the third period.

Vance Meyer stopped all 13 shots for the shutout for the Patriots while Wingham’s Garrett Golley had 12 saves.

Mount Forest was credited with going 2-for-10 on their power play while the Ironmen were scoreless on 10 power plays.

Brody Leblanc scored a pair of goals while Dylan Szymanowski, Jordan Leitch and Austin Griffin added single tallies. Elijah Brahaney had two assists while Griffin, Matthew Weiler, Adam Murray, Caleb Cribbin and Szymanowski had one each.

Second game of the best-of-seven series is slated for Friday at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Community Centre while Game 3 is to go Saturday in Mount Forest. Game time both days is 8 p.m.

Hanover Barons lead the Mitchell Hawks 1-0 in the other divisional semifinal after Hanover scored a 3-2 win in overtime at Mitchell Wednesday.
