Mount Forest Patriots rally for victory over Hanover Barons

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots added a bit of a gap between themselves and the second-place Hanover Barons with a 5-3 victory over the Barons in PJHL play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots clinched top spot in the Pollock Division Monday without playing a game as the Barons were edged by the Kincardine Bulldogs.

Saturday, the Patriots came from behind to record the win as they had three unanswered goals in the third period.

Hanover had led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second.

Elijah Brahaney had two goals and an assist for the Patriots while Charlie Mckenzie, Matthew Weiler and Dylan Szymanowski added single goals. Brody Leblanc had two assists while single assists were awarded to Ben Tenhag, William Black, Austin Griffin, Weiler, Aidan Doig, Szymanowski and Jordan Leitch.

Curtis Arnold tallied twice for Hanover while Cohen McIsaac had the other goal. Chris Feri and Ryan Goetz each had two assists while Nick Garrett had one assist.

The Patriots outshot the Barons 30-27 thanks to a 14-4 advantage in the third period. They’d been outshot 14-6 in the first period.

Vance Myer had 24 saves in net for the Patriots while Riley McCabe had 25 for the Barons.

Mount Forest leads the Pollock Division at 31-9-0-1 while Hanover (26-11-2-2) is second with a game to go. Mitchell Hawks (25-11-3-2) and Wingham Ironmen (26-13-2-1) are tied and are a point behind Hanover. The Hawks have a game to go while the Ironmen have finished their regular season.

The Kincardine Bulldogs (18-17-5-1) are fifth with a game to go while the Walkerton Capitals (7-32-1-1) and Goderich Flyers (7-32-2-0) are tied for sixth.

The Patriots are to play Kincardine Sunday at 6 p.m. at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre in a game postponed from Friday.

Sunday’s other games in the division have Mitchell playing at Goderich at 2:30 p.m. at the same time as Hanover is to play at Walkerton.
