Mount Forest Patriots rally to score Game 5 victory

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots rallied from an early three-goal deficit to down the Stayner Siskins 7-4 Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex to remain in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s playoffs.

The result cuts Stayner’s lead in the best-of-seven North Conference final to 3-2.

Stayner shot ahead with three goals in a span of just over four and a half minutes and led 3-0 at the end of the first period.

But the Patriots came back as they used their special teams to claim a 4-3 lead by the end of the second period. Three of their goals in the middle frame came on the power play while the fourth goal was a shorthanded marker.

The hosts stretched their scoring streak to six goals by the time the third period was five minutes old before the teams added a goal apiece later in the period, Mount Forest’s final goal scored into an empty net with 2:31 to play.

Charlie Mckenzie, Brody Leblanc, Caleb Cribbin, Matthew Weiler, Elijah Brahaney, Dylan Szymanowski and Jordan Leitch each scored a goal for the Patriots while Leitch had two assists and Cameron Lytle, Mckenzie, Leblanc, Weiler and Riley Torrie had one apiece.

Deandres DeJesus struck for two goals for Stayner while Tanner Hicks and Caleb Booth added one apiece. Single assists were awarded to Jack Rispin, Damen Boose, Ty Roberts, Gavin Mikaczo and Hicks.

The Patriots outshot the Siskins 41-32 and went 3-for-8 on their power play while Stayner went 1-for-3.

Tristan Szymanowski made his third appearance of the playoffs and first in almost a month in net for Mount Forest and he had 32 saves. His previous two playoff appearances were in relief of Vance Meyer in the series against the Wingham Ironmen.

Derek Hartley started in net for Stayner, but was replaced by Nick Ciccarelli after Mount Forest’s fourth goal at 14:15 of the second period. Hartley had 23 saves while Ciccarelli had 11.

Sixth game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Stayner Memorial Arena.

If the Patriots win that game, the deciding seventh game of the series is to go Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Mount Forest.

Series winner is to join the South Conference champion Wellesley Applejacks, East Conference champion Clarington Eagles and West Conference champion Lakeshore Canadiens in Woodstock May 12 to 14 for the league’s Schmalz Cup Final Four championship tournament.
