Mount Forest Patriots rally to topple Walkerton

WALKERTON – Michael Stefanelli’s goal midway through the third period lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 5-4 victory over the Walkerton Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.

The Patriots rebounded from a two-goal deficit for the win with three consecutive goals in the second period. The teams scored once each in the first and three times apiece in the second.

Walkerton had two power-play goals and a shorthanded marker in the game.

Klayton Hoelscher, Michael Anselmini, Luke Hoelscher, Jack Francis and Stefanelli each had a goal for Mount Forest while Dawson Bolger had two assists and Francis had one.

Walkerton received goals from Ryan Shaw, Brendan Welsh, Austin Vanwyck and Justin Donnelly while assists went to Jeremy Davidson, Donnelly and Welsh.

The Patriots outshot Walkerton 40-23, but were scoreless on their power play while the Hawks went 2-for-6.

Aidan Quish started in net for Mount Forest, but was replaced early in the second period after Walkerton’s third goal. David Lobsinger went the rest of the way and he picked up the win.

Mathew Donnelly was charged with the loss for Walkerton.

Mount Forest is second in the Pollock Division at 14-6-1-0 while Walkerton is fifth at 6-11-2-3.

The Patriots are to face the division-leading Wingham Ironmen Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
