Namestnikov’s goals help Storm drop Greyhounds

GUELPH – Max Namestnikov struck for four goals as he helped the Guelph Storm record their third consecutive win as they downed the Soo Greyhounds 7-3 in OHL play Friday night at the Sleeman Centre.

Namestnikov’s goals lift his total to 27 for the season with 23 of them coming in 35 games with the Storm since his trade from the Sarnia Sting at the beginning of November.

Namestnikov scored the first two goals of the game to give the Storm a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. He added his other pair of goals in the second as the Storm extended their lead to 6-2 by the end of the period.

Braeden Bowman, Charlie Paquette and Jake Karabela netted the other goals for the hosts while Bowman and Michael Buchinger each had four assists. Cooper Walker and Matthew Poitras had two assists apiece and Valentin Zhugin and Ryan McGuire had single assists.

Kalvyn Watson, Mark Duarte and Brenden Sirizzotti scored for the Greyhounds while Kirill Kudryavtsev assisted on two of the goals. Getting one assist apiece were Bryce McConnell-Barker, Sirizzotti, Owen Allard and Caeden Carlisle.

The Storm were outshot 35-33, but went 4-for-8 on their power play while Soo went 2-for-6.

Patrick Leaver had 32 saves in the Guelph net while Charlie Schenkel had 12 saves for the Greyhounds before being replaced by Samuel Ivanov after the Storm’s fifth goal. Ivanov finished with 14 saves.

The win leaves the Storm tied with the Owen Sound Attack for fifth in the Western Conference. With 12 games to go in their regular season, the Storm’s at 27-24-4-1 while Owen Sound has two games in hand at 27-22-4-1. They’re four points behind the fourth-place Saginaw Spirit (30-22-2-1) and seven behind Sarnia (29-17-5-3).

London Knights (40-14-1-0) and Windsor Spitfires (37-14-4-1) are one-two respectively in the conference and are the only teams in the conference to have already clinched playoff berths.

The Ottawa 67’s (40-11-2-2) are the lone Eastern Conference team to be locked into a playoff berth.

Soo is ninth in the Western Conference at 17-25-9-5 and are four points behind the eighth-place Kitchener Rangers (24-26-4-0) who have two games in hand on the Greyhounds.

The Storm are to host London Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
