
New Hamburg bookends four goals to top Shamrocks
CAMBRIDGE – The New Hamburg Firebirds started with two goals in the first period and finished with two in the third as they defeated the Hespeler Shamrocks 5-1 in PJHL play Sunday afternoon at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
The teams scored a goal apiece in the second period.

Tyler Reid struck for two goals for New Hamburg, the goals coming 3:21 apart in game time as his first one was at 18:34 of the second period and his second one came at 1:55 of the third.
Andrew Miele, Owen Fischer and Cole Stannix also scored for the Firebirds while Lucas Carson had two assists and Kyle Kraemer, Kaden Eichler, Riley Benko, Adam Barr, Jake Thompson, Stannix and Fischer had one apiece.
Riley Panagapka scored early in the second for Hespeler. Owen Clarke and Mitchell Smilsky assisted on the goal.
The Firebirds outshot the Shamrocks 49-20 as Hespeler was held to less than 10 shots in each period. New Hamburg went 1-for-4 on its power play and the Shamrocks were scoreless on five power plays.
Ben Desroches had 44 saves in net for the Shamrocks while Blake Richard had 19 for New Hamburg.
The Shamrocks were winless in October.
The Firebirds lead the Doherty Division at 11-1-1-0 while Hespeler is sixth at 1-10-0-1.
The Shamrocks are to play the Wellesley Applejacks (fourth at 7-4-1-1) at the Wellesley Community Centre Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Paris Mounties (seventh at 1-11-1-0) at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
