New Hamburg takes pair of games from Shamrocks

BADEN – The Hespeler Shamrocks were blanked 3-0 by the New Hamburg Firebirds in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Wilmot Recreation Complex for their second loss to the Firebirds in as many nights.

New Hamburg had won 4-1 at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Thursday night.

Friday, New Hamburg scored once in the first period and twice in the second for the win.

Jake Thompson, Owen Fischer and Jack MacDonald had a goal apiece for New Hamburg while Matt Domm, Jesse Schill, Thompson and Jayden Fischer each had one assist.

Griffin Murphy had 23 saves to get the shutout win while Hespeler’s Ben Desroches had 37 saves.

The Firebirds outshot the Shamrocks 40-23 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while Hespeler was scoreless on four power plays.

Thursday, New Hamburg scored single goals in the first and second period and added two more goals in the third while Hespeler avoided being shut out when Jack Restauri scored with 54 seconds to go. Trent Collins and Justin George assisted on the goal.

Cole Stannix had two goals for New Hamburg while Kyle Kraemer and Domm added one goal apiece. Lucas Carson gathered three assists while Antonio Pasqualino and Tyler Reid each had two and Andrew Gear had one.

Tyson Gustow had 40 saves for the Shamrocks while New Hamburg’s Blake Richard had 17.

The Firebirds outshot Hespeler 44-18 and went 1-for-7 on their power play while Hespeler didn’t score on its two power plays.

New Hamburg leads the seven-team Doherty Division at 9-0-1-0 while the Shamrocks are sixth at 1-8-0-0.

The Shamrocks are to host the Wellesley Applejacks (4-4-1-0) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
