Nighthawks downed by Montreal, third loss in a row

MONTREAL – The Guelph Nighthawks suffered their third consecutive loss in Canadian Elite Basketball League play Sunday as they were dropped 94-74 by the expansion Montreal Alliance at the Verdun Auditorium.

The Nighthawks netted the first two buckets of the game in the first 64 seconds, but Montreal grabbed the lead just over a minute later and never let it go.

The Alliance led 24-15 at the end of the first quarter, 50-38 at halftime and 75-57 after three quarters of play.

Ahmed Hill collected 25 points for the Nighthawks while Cat Barber gataherd 14 and T.J. Lall had nine. A.J. Lawson pulled down seven rebounds while Barber had six assists and Lall had three blocks.

Dominic Green struck for 22 points for Montreal while Isiah Osborne had 20, Kemy Osse had 14 and Hernst Laroche had 11. Green, James Jean-Marie and Osse each had six rebounds while Osse had four assists.

Most of the difference in points came on three-pointers as Montreal sank 15-of-29 for 51 per cent shooting outside the arc while the Nighthawks hit 9-of-32 for 28 per cent.

The Alliance also had 23 points off turnovers, 18 more than Guelph, eight steals, five more than Guelph, and six turnovers, eight fewer than Guelph.

Fraser Valley Bandits, Hamilton Honey Badgers and Niagara River Lions are all at 3-1 while Montreal’s at 3-2, Edmonton Stingers are at 2-1, Saskatchewan Rattlers are at 2-2, the Nighthawks, Ottawa BlackJacks and Scarborough Shooting Stars are all at 1-3 and Newfoundland Growlers are at 0-2.

The Nighthawks have a pair of home games at the Sleeman Centre this week as they’re to host Ottawa Thursday at 7 p.m. and Montreal Saturday at 4 p.m.
