Ninth-ranked Gryphons toppled by Western Mustangs
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their first loss of the OUA men’s volleyball season Saturday when they were edged 3-2 by the Western Mustangs at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
Western won the final two sets by 25-19 and 15-10 scores to take the match. The Mustangs had won the opening set 25-16 before the locals responded with 25-20 and 25-16 wins.
The match was close throughout and the stats showed that as Western had 51 kills, two aces and 11 blocks to 55 kills, five aces and 14 blocks for the Gryphs. The Mustangs did have 51 digs, 12 more than the Gryphs.
Zarko Ubiparip had 20 kills, two aces and three digs for the Gryphs while Jonathan Pickett had 12 kills, three digs and a block, Jakson Paterson had seven kills, two assists, a dig and six blocks and Matthew Baxter had seven kills, an ace, seven digs and two blocks. Gideon Dresser had a kill, 31 assists and 10 digs.
Jackson Bere had 16 kills, a dig and four blocks for Western while Gianfranco Sartor had 11 kills, 16 digs and a block, Evan Cranshaw had nine kills, an ace, eight digs and two blocks and Josiah Esau had a kill, 45 assists and six digs.
The Gryphs (5-1) are second in the West Division and are ranked ninth in the country while Western is tied for third in the division at 2-3. Fourth-ranked McMaster Marauders (6-1) lead the division.
The Gryphs are to tangle with the Brock Badgers (tied for third in the West at 2-4) at St. Catharines Saturday at 8 p.m. and host the Toronto Varsity Blues (second in the East at 4-1) next Sunday at 7 p.m. at the GGAC.
