
No. 9 Guelph Gryphons turn York Lions aside
GUELPH – The ninth-ranked Guelph Gryphons withstood a rally by the York Lions in the second half to score an 82-72 victory in OUA women’s basketball play Saturday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.
The Lions went on a 22-9 run that started early in the third quarter to grab a 63-61 lead just over a minute and a half into the fourth quarter. The Gryphs, though, responded with seven consecutive points to claim a lead they wouldn’t give up.

The Gryphs led 20-16 at the end of the first quarter, 47-39 at halftime and 61-57 after three quarters.
Mackeely Shantz led all scorers with 27 points for the Gryphs while Renee Armstrong hit for 17 and Julia Colavecchia had 12. Colavecchia also had 12 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and five steals. Lucy Tesseyman also had two blocks.
York had five players hit double digits in scoring. Cyanna King led with 17 points while Lauren Golding had 15, Guelph native Jada Codrington had 13, Kiara Leveridge had 12 and Maya Abouzeid had 10. King and Golding had eight rebounds apiece while Golding and Codrington each had four assists, King had two blocks and four steals.
The Gryphs, whose largest lead of 13 points came midway through the first quarter, shot 42 percent on field goals, 31 percent on three-pointers and 78 percent on free throws. The Gryphs also had 14 points in the paint, 28 off turnovers, 10 on second chances and 15 from their bench.
The Lions shot 32 percent on field goals, 30 percent on three-pointers and 69 percent on free throws. They also had six points in the paint, 21 off turnovers, nine on second chances and 13 from their bench.
The win was the fourth in as many outings in league play and their eighth in a row when preseason games are taken into consideration. Their only loss was a five-point lead to the Concordia Stingers in their preseason opener at the Naismith Classic in Waterloo Oct. 13.
The loss drops the Lions to 2-4 in league play.
The Gryphs have a pair of road games this week against the Algoma Thunderbirds (0-6) who are averaging 43-point losses. The games in Sault Ste. Marie are set for Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
