No upsets as hosts win boys’ volleyball quarter-finals

GUELPH – No surprises in the District 10 high school senior boys volleyball league’s quarter-finals Monday as the hosts were the victors.

The Lourdes Crusaders and Centre Wellington Falcons posted victories to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

Lourdes edged the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 3-2 as they rallied from a two-set deficit. The Gaels took the opening two sets 25-21 and 25-17 before the Crusaders prevailed with 25-14, 25-21 and 15-12 set wins.

Lourdes had finished third in the six-team league at 5-5 while GCVI was sixth at 1-9 and the Crusaders had won both of their regular-season meetings with the Gaels, 3-0 at Lourdes Oct. 11 and 3-2 at GCVI last week.

The Crusaders advance to play the Ross Royals in the semifinals. That match is to go Wednesday at Ross starting at 4 p.m.

The Royals finished second at 9-1 and defeated the Crusaders 3-1 at Lourdes Oct. 4 and 3-1 at Ross Oct. 27.

The Centre Wellington Falcons defeated the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 3-1 in Fergus in Monday’s other quarter-final.

The Falcons won the close match 25-23, 27-25, 16-25, 25-22.

Centre Wellington had finished fourth at 4-6 and Bishop Mac was fifth at 2-8. The teams had split their regular-season matches with the Celtics winning 3-2 at Bishop Mac Sept. 27 and the Falcons winning 3-1 at Fergus Oct. 20.

The Falcons move on to play the Centennial Spartans in the semifinals Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Centennial.

The Spartans finished first at 9-1, getting top spot by prevailing in the tiebreaker with Ross. Centennial beat the Falcons 3-0 at Centre Wellington Sept. 22 and 3-1 at Centennial Oct. 18.

Semifinal winners are to meet in the championship game next Monday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Centennial is the defending senior champion.

 

Junior Boys’ Volleyball

The home teams were also the winners in the junior boys’ quarter-finals Monday as the Centre Wellington Falcons defeated the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 3-1 at Fergus and the Orangeville Bears downed the Lourdes Crusaders 3-1 at Orangeville.

Centre Wellington won 26-24, 25-13, 20-25, 25-20 and Orangeville won 25-23, 25-27, 25-17, 25-21.

Centennial Spartans finished atop the league at 9-1 and were followed by the Ross Royals at 7-3, Orangeville at 6-4, Centre Wellington at 5-5, GCVI at 3-7 and Lourdes at 0-10.

The Spartans are to host Centre Wellington in Wednesday’s semifinals while Orangeville and Ross are to tangle at Ross. Both matches carry 4 p.m. game times.

Centennial swept Centre Wellington twice during the regular season, winning 3-0 at Centre Wellington Sept. 22 and 3-0 at Centennial Oct. 18.

Ross and Orangeville split their regular-season meetings with the Royals winning 3-1 at Ross Sept. 27 and the Bears taking their Oct. 20 match 3-2 at Orangeville.

Semifinal winners are to advance to the championship game set for next Monday at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

Ross won each of the last two junior championship matches.
