Norwell, Emmanuel Christian move on to senior soccer final

ORANGEVILLE – The Norwell Varsity Reds gained a berth in the District 4 high school senior boys’ soccer final by surprising the Westside Thunder 2-0 in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Norwell had completed the regular season in third place with a 2-3-1 record while Westside was second at 2-1-3.

However, the teams had a pair of close games during league play as Westside won 3-2 in the season opener Sept. 24 at Palmerston and the teams battled to a scoreless draw Oct. 3 at Orangeville.

Caleb Carere and Josh Moore scored for Norwell Wednesday.

The Varsity Reds are to play the first-place Emmanuel Christian Eagles at Victoria Park in Fergus in Monday’s championship match. Game time is 3:30 p.m.

 

Emmanuel Christian 2 Centre Dufferin 1

Emmanuel Christian won a penalty-shot shootout 4-3 to claim the victory and the right to host the final.

Regulation time and overtime failed to produce a winner as the teams went into the shootout tied 1-1.

Aaron VanSydenborgh scored for Emmanuel Christian while Ben Callegari tallied for Centre Dufferin.

Emmanuel Christian had finished first at 3-0-3 while Centre Dufferin was fourth at 1-4-1. Twice the Eagles had beaten the Royals by a single goal during the regular season.

Norwell gained a berth in Monday’s final with the semifinal win over Centre Dufferin.

B. Hieber and G. Maxwell scored for Norwell while C. Adams-Lane had the goal for Centre Dufferin.
