Norwell hockey girls win three on home ice to finish first

PALMERSTON – The Norwell Varsity Reds claimed a first-place finish in the District 4 high school girls’ hockey league standings with three wins at their home arena Thursday.

The league wrapped up its regular season with its fifth regular-season mini-tournament of the season. Each mini-tournament included four of the league’s five teams for round-robin play. Each team missed one mini-tournament during the season giving each team a 12-game regular season.

Norwell and Wellington Heights Wolverines finished the regular season with identical 10-2-0-0 records, but the Varsity Reds get the nod for top spot thanks to winning two of their three games with the Wolverines, the second win being a 3-1 victory Thursday in the final game of the regular season.

Norwell also defeated the Westside Thunder 2-0 and Erin Raiders 7-0 Thursday.

Keeley Franklin scored both goals in the win over Westside. Scorers were not reported in any of the other games.

Wellington Heights had a pair of wins as the Wolverines blanked Erin 4-0 and Westside 3-0.

In the other game of the day, Westside slipped by Erin 2-1.

While Norwell finished first and Wellington Heights second, the Centre Dufferin Royals were third at 6-5-1-0, Westside fourth at 2-9-1-0 and Erin fifth at 1-11-0-0.

Playoffs are to start next week with Westside playing Norwell in a semifinal at Shelburne Wednesday afternoon.
