Norwell ousts top two to get in boys’ hockey final

FERGUS – The Norwell Varsity Reds have proven to be giant killers in the District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey league’s playoffs.

In fact, Norwell has won as many games in this year’s playoffs as it did in this season’s regular season.

The Varsity Reds knocked off the Centre Wellington Falcons in Monday’s semifinal match that was postponed from last week due to weather conditions.

Norwell won that semifinal 4-3 to join the Orangeville Bears in the final that is scheduled to go Thursday afternoon at Orangeville’s Tony Rose arena.

The Varsity Reds gained their berth in the semifinals with a 7-5 quarter-final victory over the Ross Royals.

Centre Wellington had finished the regular season in first place at 10-1-1-0 while Ross was second at 9-2-1-0 and Norwell was seventh at 2-9-1-0.

Orangeville placed third at 9-3-0-0.

Thursday’s game is to start at 1:30 p.m.
