Norwell sweeps volleyball doubleheader to finish regular season

FERGUS – The Norwell Varsity Reds completed the District 4 high school girls’ volleyball league’s regular season by sweeping their senior-junior doubleheader with the Emmanuel Christian Eagles.

The Varsity Reds seniors won 3-0, taking the sets 25-20, 25-8, 25-16.

The Varsity Reds junior triumphed 3-1. They rebounded from a 25-20 loss in the first set with three consecutive set victories — 25-20, 25-21, 25-17.

The victory in senior allowed Norwell to finish in first place with a record of 9-1. Westside Thunder was second at 8-2, but Norwell had already clinched top spot as the Varsity Reds would have prevailed in a tie-breaker with the Thunder. Wellington Heights Wolverines was third at 7-3 and the other three teams in the league – Emmanuel Christian, Centre Dufferin Royals and Erin Raiders – finished at 2-8. The tie-breaker formula gave Centre Dufferin fourth place and the final playoff berth.

The league’s semifinals and final are to go Friday at Norwell. Centre Dufferin is to play Norwell in one semifinal while Wellington Heights is to play Westside in the other. Both semifinals are set for 11 a.m.

Semifinal winners advance to the league final at 1 p.m.

Norwell’s win in junior gave the Varsity Reds second at 6-4. Erin finished first at 8-2 while Wellington Heights and Emmanuel Christian both finished at 5-5. Westside was at 4-6 and Centre Dufferin trailed at 2-8.

The junior playoffs are to go Friday at Erin.

The 11 a.m. semifinals have Emmanuel Christian playing Erin and Wellington Heights battling Norwell.

Winners move on to the final slated for 1 p.m.
