Norwell Varsity Reds keep girls’ hockey crown
PALMERSTON – The District 4 high school girls’ hockey championship title is staying put.
The Norwell Varsity Reds captured their third consecutive D4 crown Thursday when they edged the Wellington Heights Wolverines 2-1 at the Palmerston arena.
The win was Norwell’s fourth in five years. Between them, the championship-game combatants have accounted for every league title since the Centre Dufferin Royals prevailed in 2012 at the end of the first season after the split from a combined District 4/10 league.
Alexa Marquardt scored both goals for Norwell.
Erin Rooney had the lone goal for Wellington Heights.
Norwell advances to the CWOSSA A/AA championship tournament to be held at Kincardine Monday and Tuesday.
Norwell will be in a pool that plays at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre with the Grey Highlands Lions of Flesherton, St. David Celtics of Waterloo and Paris Panthers.
The other pool, which will play at the Tiverton Sports Complex, consists of Guelph’s St. James Lions, Simcoe Composite Sabres, St. Mary’s Mustangs of Owen Sound and Galt Ghosts of Cambridge.
Monday’s games will all be pool play matches while Tuesday’s games will feature the semifinals at 8:30 a.m. and the championship match later in the day at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre.
