
Norwich nets five in third to down Shamrocks
NORWICH – The Hespeler Shamrocks yielded five goals in the third period as they were handed a 9-5 setback by the Norwich Merchants in PJHL play Friday night at the NOR-DEL Arena.
Norwich scored twice in the first three and a half minutes of the game and led 2-1 at the end of the first period, but the Shamrocks rallied to tie the score 4-4 by the end of the second as they were helped by two goals 29 seconds apart early in the period.

Hespeler shot ahead with a power-play goal at 6:19 of the third, but Norwich responded with five in a row, including a pair of goals that gave the hosts the lead just over a minute and a half after the Shamrocks had shot ahead.
Thomas Giffin scored twice for Hespeler while single goals were netted by Mitchell Smilsky, Owen Clarke and Hudson Weger. Braeden Tyler assisted on two of the goals while Weger, Ethan Hodgert, Mitch Perry, Carter Murphy, Hayden Opyc and Smilsky each had one assist.
Josh King, Austin Forsyth and Joel Storoschuk tallied twice apiece for the Merchants while Kyle Brezinski, Hayden Mclean and Zach Allison also scored. Kaleb Kloepfer, Graham Sutcliffe and Reid Lazou each had two assists while Travis Lamb, Forsyth, King, Allison, Owen Harris and Storoschuk had one apiece.
Norwich outshot the Shamrocks 45-34 and went 1-for-4 on the power play while Hespeler went 1-for-5.
Ben Desroches had 36 saves for Hespeler while Jacob Harford started in net for Norwich, but was replaced by Carter Spence at 5:39 of the second after Hespeler’s third goal. Harford had 10 saves and Spence had 19.
The result leaves the Shamrocks sixth in the Doherty Division at 2-12-1-1 and Norwich fourth at 9-6-1-0.
The Shamrocks are to host the third-place Wellesley Applejacks (10-4-1-1) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
