Oakville Trafalgar keeps title, Ross keeps medal streak
MISSISSAUGA – The Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils left no doubt who the top team in Ontario high school AAA girls’ rugby this season was when they ran by the Ross Royals in the OFSAA final Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Secondary School.
The Red Devils handed the Royals their first loss of the season as they captured the crown with a 71-0 win.
It took top-seed Oakville Trafalgar just over two minutes to score their first try of the game against the second-seed Royals and they went on from there to lead 38-0 at halftime.
Taylor Black scored four tries for the Red Devils while Jaden Walker had three and Emilie Demers, Jessika Hurd, Sarah Penman and Bridget Peros had one apiece. Gillian Groth kicked seven converts and Anja de Vries added one.
The win, their largest margin of victory in the three-day tournament, wrapped up a dominating performance for Oakville Trafalgar. The Red Devils didn’t give up a single points in the provincial tournament and scored 200 of their own.
To get to the final, the Royals won three consecutive games, outscoring their opponents 100-24 in the process.
The championship win is the second in a row for Oakville Trafalgar, their third in four years and fourth in seven years.
It was also the third consecutive year that Oakville Trafalgar and Ross met in the gold-medal game.
For the Royals, it’s the fourth consecutive year they’ve won a medal at the OFSAA tournament. They won bronze in 2015, gold in 2016 and silver in both 2017 and 2018.
