Ontario Cup title for Junior Gryphons (Vosper)

WINDSOR – The Guelph Junior Gryphons (Vosper) captured the provincial Ontario Cup title in their division in the U15 boys class.

The Junior Gryphs entered the tournament ranked sixth in the eight-team field and opened play with a thrilling 63-62 victory over the second-ranked and previously undefeated Golbourne Hornets from the Ottawa region. Daniel Wang had 12 points for the locals while Robert Vosper and Johnny Beaton each contributed 10.

Using a stifling defence and strong inside game, the Junior Gryphs followed that win by knocking off third-seed CKATT of Toronto 61-43. Vosper netted 16 points while Wang had 13 and Will Glaspell added nine.

That win guaranteed the Guelph squad a spot in the gold-medal game.

Before that, though, the locals completed pool play with a fourth-quarter rally that saw them defeat Blessed Sacrament One of Hamilton 64-56. Blessed Sacrament was motivated to put an end to their unbeaten record at the tournament and led at halftime. The Junior Gryphs carried a lead of a single point into the fourth quarter before pulling away. Vosper led with 22 points while Glaspell scored 12 and Wang had 11.

The locals turned in another comeback in the gold-medal game against top-seed IEM Spartans. The Junior Gryphs trailed by 12 points early in the match before coming back to register a 67-59 victory. Vosper hit for 20 points while Glaspell had 14 and Beaton contributed 11.

The tournament wrapped up the Ontario Basketball Association portion of the team’s season and they finished with an overall 24-3 record and a 13-game win streak to complete the season. They also won 19 of their final 20 games.

Next up is an international event in Montreal at the end of June.

Playing members of the team are Johnny Beaton, Eric Dewar, Will Glaspell, Landon Hart, Hunter Matthewson, Will McKenzie, Noah Mondesire, Jaylen Phillip, Nick Poloniato, Jordon Rodgers, Robert Vosper and Daniel Wang.
