Orangeville stays out of cellar with rally for win

GUELPH –The Orangeville Bears avoided a finish in the basement of the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball league with a 62-51 victory over the Bishop Macdonell Celtics Thursday on the final day of the league’s regular season.

The Celtics had the tough task of needing to win by more than 27 points in order not to finish eighth in the eight-team league.

Things started well for host Bishop Mac when the Celtics scored the first 10 points of the game and held Orangeville scoreless for more than four and a half minutes. But the Bears rebounded to close the gap to 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and then they grabbed a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in the second quarter. Orangeville led 31-27 at halftime and 46-42 at the end of the third quarter.

Hassan Badran hit for 25 points to lead Orangeville while Charlie Hamilton had 19 and Lucas Bowyer added nine.

Justin Faienza sank five three-pointers and finished with 23 points for Bishop Mac while Craig Boudreau and Caelen Fraser had seven apiece.

Centre Wellington Falcons finished atop the league at 13-1 and were followed by St. James Lions at 11-3, Centennial Spartans and Guelph CVI Green Gaels each at 9-5, Ross Royals at 8-6, Lourdes Crusaders at 4-10, Orangeville at 2-12 and Bishop Mac at 0-14.

Tuesday’s quarter-finals have Centre Wellington hosting Bishop Mac, St. James hosting Orangeville, Centennial hosting Lourdes and GCVI hosting Ross.

Kyle Kush led GCVI with 18 points while Ben Tofil netted 15.

Jake Warywoda had 15 for Centennial.


St. James 66 Lourdes 59

Alex Garbuio had 18 points for St. James while Matt Sanvido collected 17.

Will Vandenheuvel gathered 14 for Lourdes and Isaac Krueger followed with 10.


Centre Wellington 75 Ross 47

Cole Newton struck for 32 points for Centre Wellington while Johnny Barclay added 12.

Zaid Karsiem had 14 for Ross and Sebastian Perizzolo-Furminger contributed nine.



Visiting teams swept the junior league’s games on the final day of the regular season.

Ross finished first at 13-1 and was followed by Orangeville at 12-2, Lourdes at 10-4, Centennial at 8-6, GCVI at 6-8, Bishop Mac at 5-9 and St. James and Centre Wellington each at 1-13.

Rowan Steele had 29 points for Orangeville.

Tyler Blais hit for 16 points for Lourdes while Noah Penny chipped in with 10.

Kelvin Nkubito had 16 for St. James.

Centennial 66 Guelph CVI 41

Jackson Wallace collected a game-high 22 points for Centennial while Mason Reid, Jackson Davidson and Sebastian Harmon-Denhoed contributed 10 apiece.

Kristian Varosi and Leo Szabo had eight apiece for GCVI.
