OUA West is U Sports football’s Division of Death

GUELPH – To use a term usually reserved for soccer’s World Cup or European championships, the OUA’s West Division must be U Sports’ football’s Division of Death.

The term’s used to describe division’s that feature strong teams.

Well, of the six teams in OUA West football, five were ranked in the U Sports top 10 rankings for Week 2 of the 2021 season.

In other terms, that means that only five of the teams in the top 10 in the country were not in the OUA West.

Those rankings will change, but the Western Mustangs entered as No. 1, Waterloo Warriors No. 5, Gryphons No. 7, Laurier Golden Hawks No. 8 and McMaster Marauders No. 9.

Saturday’s games in the division had two matches that featured two top-10 teams. The Gryphons edged Western 23-21 and Waterloo dropped Laurier 36-12. McMaster had a bye.

No team from the OUA East is in the top 10, but the Queen’s Gaels received honourable mention and their vote total would rank the Gaels 12th.

Other teams in the top 10 were the Calgary Dinos in second, Montreal Carabins third, Laval Rouge et Or fourth, Saskatchewan Huskies sixth and Concordia Stingers 10th. Acadia Axemen were tops of the Atlantic Conference as an honourable mention with enough points to be ranked 11th.

The toughness of the OUA West means that a pretty good team is going to miss postseason play. The league has upped its playoff participants to eight this year – the usual number is six – with four in each division making it.

That will put two OUA West teams on the outside looking in and one in the East not qualifying.
