Overtime setback puts 81’s on edge of elimination

PORT ELGIN – The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks struck for a goal nine and a half minutes into overtime to edge the Mapleton-Minto 81’s 3-2 in Western Ontario Athletic Association senior men’s hockey AA quarter-final playoff action Tuesday night at the Saugeen Shores arena.

The 81’s scored the only goal of the first period before the teams tallied once each in the second. Saugeen Shores tied it up midway through the third and that goal forced the overtime.

Brody Lemay and Tommy Hoogaars scored the goals for M-M.

Miles MacLean, Andy Mitchell and James McHaig connected for Saugeen Shores, McHaig getting the winner.

The win gives Saugeen Shores a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Fifth game is slated for Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Port Elgin. If a sixth game is necessary it’s to be played Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Listowel’s Steve Kerr Complex. If a seventh game is needed it’s to go Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Port Elgin.

The other three AA quarter-finals finished in four-game sweeps with the Clinton Radars, Ripley Wolves and Durham Thundercats posting the series wins.
