Overtime win puts Rocks back in lead of final
FERGUS – Jacob Black’s goal almost four and a half minutes into overtime lifted the Elora Rocks to a 5-4 victory over the Tillsonburg Thunder in Game 3 of the very first Sleemans Cup Western Ontario Super Hockey League championship series Friday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
The win gives the Rocks a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series as each game played in the series has been won by the home team.
Elora Rocks 5 Tillsonburg 4 (OT)
After a scoreless first period, the Thunder opened the scoring with a power-play goal before the Rocks struck for three in a row to claim a 3-1 lead by the end of the second. The teams alternated goals in the third period until the Thunder tied it with 49 seconds to go.
Scoring for the Rocks with a goal apiece were Matteo Condotta, Andrew Whalen, Phil Teri, Charlie Stephens and Black. Zack Cameron had two assists while Alex Utley, Chad Herron, Jeremey Goodwin and Shaun Pickering had one each.
Matthew Weston hit for a pair of goals for Tillsonburg and Cam Sault and Zak Mcquade added single tallies. Brendan Barletta assisted on three of the goals while Todd Ratchford had two assists and Braden Roberts, Sault and Jake Brown had one apiece.
The Rocks outshot the Thunder 41-35 while Tillsonburg went 2-for-6 on its power play while Elora was scoreless on three power plays.
Colin Dunne had 31 saves for the Rocks while Jesse Raymond had 36 for Tillsonburg.
Game 4 is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Tillsonburg Community Centre.
