Owen Sound’s Hancock too much for Storm
OWEN SOUND – The Guelph Storm kept every Owen Sound Attack player scoreless except Kevin Hancock, but he struck for a hat trick as Owen Sound edged the Storm 3-2 in Ontario Hockey League play Wednesday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
After a scoreless first period, Hancock scored twice in the second period to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. He added to the lead midway through the third before the Storm scored with just less than two and a half minutes to go to cut the gap to the final one-goal margin.
Isaac Ratcliffe and Alexey Toropchenko scored for the Storm while assists went to Liam Hawel, Domenico Commisso, Owen Lalonde and Nate Schnarr.
Getting assists for Owen Sound were Zachary Roberts, Maksim Sushko, Sean Durzi and Brady Lyle.
Owen Sound outshot the Storm 39-33 led by Hancock’s game-high nine. His goal production gives him 31 on the season, tied for third in the league. Tye Felhaber of the Ottawa 67’s leads with 42.
The Storm went 1-for-6 on its power play while Owen Sound went 1-for-4.
Nico Daws took the loss in the Guelph net despite stopping 36 shots while winner Mack Guzda had 31 saves for Owen Sound.
The Storm is second in the Midwest Division at 19-10-3-4 while Owen Sound is third, two points behind at 20-14-1-2. The Storm has a game in hand.
The loss puts an end to a five-game winning streak for the Storm and was their first since they were edged by an identical score by the Attack at Owen Sound Dec. 11.
The Storm has a pair of home games scheduled for this weekend as they’re to host the Windsor Spitfires (15-19-2-1) Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the North Bay Battalion (17-18-1-1) Sunday at 2 p.m.
