Patriots and Hanover tie one on to start their PJHL seasons

HANOVER – The Mount Forest Patriots opened their Provincial Junior Hockey League regular season by skating to a 1-1 draw with the Hanover Barons Friday night at the P and H Centre.

The Patriots scored their goal in the second period while Hanover forced the overtime with a goal with 13 seconds to go in regulation time.

Jared Rowe had an unassisted goal for Mount Forest.

Austin Griffin scored for Hanover with help from Trent Verbeek and Bryan Richardson.

The teams remained tied through a seven-minute overtime period.

The Patriots were outshot 44-25 and were scoreless on three power plays while the Barons were scoreless on seven. Including misconducts, the teams were each whistled for 26 minutes in penalties.

Gleb Poliakov made 43 saves for the tie for the Patriots while Riley McCabe had 24 saves for the tie for Hanover.

The Patriots are to host the Walkerton Hawks in their home opener tonight at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Walkerton was dropped 9-2 by the Wingham Ironmen Friday night at Walkerton while the Kincardine Bulldogs edged the Mitchell Hawks 4-3 at Kincardine.

Tonight’s game is the first of four consecutive home games for the Patriots as they’re to host the Kincardine Bulldogs Oct. 8, Mitchell Hawks Oct. 9 and Wingham Oct. 16.
