Patriots and Wingham battle to PJHL deadlock
MOUNT FOREST – Overtime settled nothing as the Mount Forest Patriots and Wingham Ironmen battled to a 3-3 standoff in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before the Patriots scored the only goal of the second. The hosts extended their lead in the opening minute of the third, but Wingham came back with two goals later in the period, the tying goal coming with 16 seconds to go in regulation time and the goaltender out in favour of an extra attacker.
Hayden Coulter and Ryley Cribbin were in on all three goals for the Patriots. Coulter scored two of them and assisted on the other goal that was scored by Cribbin who assisted on both of Coulter’s goals. Jack Birkett, Chet Philips and Luke Eurig each had one assist.
Scoring for Wingham were Rhys Vollmer, Tyson Koopman and Liam Melady while assists went to Kyle Stanbury, Logan Tolton, Vollmer and Brayden Fischer.
The Patriots outshot the Ironmen 46-45 thanks to a 6-5 advantage in shots in the extra period.
Aidan Quish had the tie in net for the hosts. He had 42 saves while Wingham’s Devon Carson had 43 saves to get the tie for the Ironmen.
Mount Forest went 1-for-5 on its power play and held Wingham scoreless on three power plays.
The Ironmen lead the Pollock Division standings at 7-0-1-0 while Mount Forest is second at 5-1-1-0.
Next game for the Patriots is set for Friday when they’re to play the Hanover Barons (3-3-1-1) at Hanover’s P and H Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
That game is to be the first game of a 3-in-3 weekend for the Patriots as they’re to host Wingham again Saturday at 8 p.m. and play the Mitchell Hawks (4-2-0-1) at the Mitchell arena Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.
