Patriots atop Pollock Division after overtime victory
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots grabbed sole possession of first place in the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s Pollock Division with a 4-3 victory in overtime over the Wingham Ironmen.
The result leaves the Patriots one point ahead of the Ironmen.
Mount Forest scored once in each period for the win, but had to rally from a 3-2 deficit at the end of the second period.
Blair Butchart’s goal for Mount Forest with the goalie out in favour of an extra skater with 41 seconds to go in regulation time forced the overtime.
Ryley Cribbin put an end to the overtime when he scored for the Patriots 14 seconds into the extra period.
Butchart’s goal was his second of the game while William Black scored the other goal for Mount Forest. Assists went to Cribbin, Riley Torrie, Matthew Weiler, Jack Birkett and Michael Stefanelli.
Chase Meurs, Kyle Stanbury and Rhys Vollmer scored for Wingham while Dawson Fahrer, Tanner Reid, Brady Becker, Vollmer, Meurs and Carter Collinson.
Wingham never scored when the teams were at even strength as the Ironmen had two power-play goals and a shorthanded goal.
Wingham outshot the Patriots 39-36 and went 2-for-4 on its power play while Mount Forest was scoreless on five power plays.
Aidan Quish had 36 saves for the win in the Mount Forest net while Devon Carson stopped 32 shots in the Wingham net.
The Patriots lead the division at 15-3-1-0 and have two games in hand on second-place Wingham (14-5-1-1).
The Patriots are to host the fourth-place Hanover Barons (11-7-0-1) Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
