Patriots clip Walkerton Hawks in overtime

WALKERTON – Nathan Bolger’s goal with 55 seconds left in overtime lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 5-4 victory over the Walkerton Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.

The teams had scored a goal apiece in the first period. Mount Forest outscored Walkerton 2-1 in the second period and the Hawks outscored the Patriots 2-1 in the third.

Austin Vanwyck’s unassisted goal for the host Hawks with 11 seconds to go in regulation time forced the extra period.

Chet Philips, Thomas Haffner, Jack Birkett, Ryley Cribbin and Bolger scored the goals for Mount Forest. Klayton Hoelscher assisted on three of the goals while Michael Stefanelli and Troy Weber each had two assists and Haffner and Parker Miller each had one assist.

Vanwyck had two goals for Walkerton and Jarrett Vandolder and Thomas Brown scored one apiece. Austin Brown assisted on two of the goals and Spencer Elder and Brady Stewart assisted on one apiece.

Mount Forest outshot Walkerton 50-24 including a 25-6 margin in the opening period. The Patriots went 1-for-6 on their power play and held Walkerton scoreless on seven power plays.

Aidan Quish had 20 saves for the win in the Mount Forest net. Walkerton’s Mathew Donnelly had 45 saves in the loss.

The result leaves the Patriots second in the Pollock Division at 23-8-1-0. They’re a point behind the leading Wingham Ironmen who have a game in hand.

Walkerton is sixth at 8-17-3-4. They trail fifth-place Hanover Barons by a point and fourth-place Mitchell Hawks by two points.

The Patriots are to host Wingham (23-6-1-1) Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
