Patriots clip Wingham in OT to grab lead in Pollock final

MOUNT FOREST – Brady Becker’s goal after more than nine minutes of overtime lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 5-4 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in Provincial Junior Hockey League playoff action Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

It was the first time a game in the best-of-seven Pollock Division final had been won by the home team. The victory gives the Patriots a 3-2 lead in the series.

The goal gave Mount Forest its only lead of the match. The teams traded goals throughout with Wingham scoring first in each of the three regulation-time periods. The teams were tied 1-1 after the first and 2-2 at the end of the second.

Thomas Haffner’s goal with 4:02 to go in regulation time pulled the Patriots even at 4-4 and forced the overtime.

Becker finished with two goals for the Patriots while single goals were netted by Brody Leblanc, Klayton Hoelscher and Haffner. Ryley Cribbin assisted on four of the goals while single assists were awarded to Becker, Haffner, Derek Williams, Hoelscher and Thomas Coulter.

Carter Collinson scored twice for Wingham while Corey Restoule and Logan Tolton added single goals. Jamie Huber and Logan Tolton each had two assists and Jacob Bishop and Collinson had one apiece.

Wingham outshot the Patriots 47-44 and there were no power-play goals scored in the game. There were three minor penalties called in the match, two to Mount Forest.

Aidan Quish turned aside 43 shots to get the win in the Mount Forest net while Devon Carson had 39 saves for Wingham.

Sixth game of the series is to go Saturday at 7 p.m. at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Community Complex.

If Wingham wins Saturday’s game, the teams are to be back at it Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Forest.

Winner of the series is to play the Alliston Hornets, champions of the Carruthers Division, in the North Conference final.
