Patriots clobber Walkerton in shortened home opener
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots limited their scoring to the first period as they clouted the Walkerton Hawks 7-0 in their Provincial Junior Hockey League home opener Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The first period actually turned out to be the first half as the game was called after the second period due to issues with the Zamboni ice-cleaning machine.

The Patriots outshot Walkerton 23-10 in the first period and 38-20 overall.
Mount Forest opened the scoring just shy of the game’s three-minute mark, but most of it damage came late in the period when the Patriots scored four times in a span of four minutes and 57 seconds.
Gleb Poliakov had 20 saves for the shutout for Mount Forest while Nick Gagne had 31 saves for Walkerton.
Jared Rowe struck for a pair of goals for the Patriots while singletons were added by Kobe Roe, Aaron McGuirk, Owen Goetz, Calan Tanzi-Foshay and Hayden Coulter. Derrick Cornfield collected four assists while Mark Aljoe had three, Matt McLellan had two and Riley Torrie, Tanzi-Foshay and McGuirk had one apiece.
The Patriots went 2-for-3 on their power play and held Walkerton scoreless on two power plays.
The result leaves the Patriots at 1-0-0-1 and Walkerton at 0-2-0-0.
The game was the first of four consecutive home games for the Patriots. They’re to host the Kincardine Bulldogs (1-0-0-0) Friday at 8:30 p.m., Mitchell Hawks (0-2-0-0) Saturday at 8 p.m. and Wingham Ironmen (2-0-0-0) Oct. 16 at 8 p.m.
