Patriots connect in OT to clip Walkerton Hawks

MOUNT FOREST – Darcy Winkler’s goal in overtime lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 5-4 victory over the Walkerton Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Winkler struck for the game-winner on a power play at 6:07 of the extra period to grab a come-from-behind victory. The Patriots had trailed by three midway through regulation time.

The Hawks had opened the scoring with a pair of goals 59 seconds apart late in the first period and they added another one early in the second.

However, Mount Forest had pulled even by the end of the second with a trio of goals and the hosts took the lead a second shy of the third period’s five-minute mark. They held that lead until Walkerton tied it on a power play with 26 seconds to go in the third.

The overtime goal was Winkler’s second goal of the game while Christopher Prucha also scored twice. Benjamin Tenhag had the other goal while Brock Reinhart had three assists and Aaron McGuirk, Prucha, Riley Torrie, Winkler, Calan Tanzi-Foshay and Derrick Cornfield each had one assist.

Caleb Morrison, Elliot McCarey, Hayden Robinson and Jamie Damignani each scored a goal for Walkerton. Keegan Fischer and McCarey collected two assists apiece while single assists were awarded to Kaleb Smith, Brayden Fischer, Connor Borth and Austin Brown.

Joshua Peters had 32 saves to get the win for the Patriots while Kyle Rivers took the overtime loss with 45 saves for Walkerton.

Mount Forest is fourth in the Pollock Division with a 7-4-0-1 record while Walkerton is sixth at 2-9-1-1.

The Patriots are to play the Goderich Flyers (0-13-0-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex.
