Patriots connect in third to edge Wingham

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots scored a pair of goals in the third period to clip the Wingham Ironmen 2-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

After a scoreless first period, Wingham hit for the only goal of the second. The hosts answered back with goals early and late in the third.

Austin Becker opened the scoring for Wingham at 8:36 of the second period. Evan Visser helped on the play.

Christopher Prucha tied it for the Patriots at 4:28 of the third. Aaron McGuirk and Darcy Winkler assisted on the goal.

Malcolm Skeete fired in the winner for Mount Forest with 1:46 to go in regulation time. Mark Aljoe and Prucha drew assists.

The Patriots outshot the Ironmen 17-11 in the third period and 43-37 overall.

Michael Brassor stopped 36 shots in the Mount Forest net while Devon Carson had 41 saves for Wingham.

Both teams were scoreless on their power plays, the Patriots on three and Wingham on two.

The Patriots are to play the Mitchell Hawks at the Mitchell Arena Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

It’s to be the first of three meetings between the Patriots and Hawks this month as they’re also to play in Mount Forest next Friday and at Mitchell again Dec. 18.
