Patriots cruise to opening-game victory

WALKERTON – The Mount Forest Patriots scored the first five goals of the game as they started their Provincial Junior Hockey League season with a 5-1 victory over the Walkerton Hawks Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.

After a scoreless first period, the reigning Pollock Division champions led 3-0 by the end of the second.

George Novachis struck for a pair of goals for the Patriots while single goals were added by Michael Stefanelli, Parker Miller and Jack Birkett. Thomas Haffner had two assists while Klayton Hoelscher, Novachis, Stefanelli and Michael Anselmini each had one.

Jeremy Davidson scored a shorthanded goal for Walkerton with just under eight minutes to go in the game. Owen Torrie picked up an assist.

The Patriots outshot Walkerton 32-20 and went 1-for-6 on their power play while the Hawks were scoreless on six power plays.

David Lobsinger made 19 saves for the win in net for the Patriots while Mathew Donnelly had 27 saves in the loss for Walkerton.

The Patriots are to play their home opener Saturday when they host the Hanover Barons at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
