Patriots doubled in opening game of conference final

MOUNT FOREST – Mount Forest Patriots surrendered a pair of goals in the first period and that proved to be the difference in the game as the Patriots were doubled 4-2 by the Stayner Siskins in the opening game of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s North Conference final Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The teams scored once each in both of the remaining two periods, Mount Forest scoring first both times.

The Patriots cut the gap to a single goal with 1:20 to go in the third period, but Stayner regained its two-goal lead with an empty-netter 12 seconds later.

Kyle Detweiler and Caleb Cribbin scored the goals for the hosts while Matthew Weiler and Charlie Mckenzie assisted on both.

Damen Boose had two goals for Stayner to give him 18 in the playoffs while Deandres DeJesus and Ethan Allair added single goals. Ty Roberts, Allair, Christopher Prucha, Tanner Hicks, Cody Marles and Boose each had one assist.

The Siskins outshot the Patriots 37-30 thanks to a 13-5 advantage in the first period. Stayner was scoreless on three power plays while Mount Forest didn’t score on six power plays.

Vance Meyer had 33 saves in the Mount Forest net while Derek Hartley had 28 saves for Stayner.

Second game of the best-of-seven series is to be played Sunday at the Stayner Memorial Arena. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
