Patriots dropped in opening game of North final

STAYNER – The Mount Forest Patriots were handed a 9-4 setback by the Stayner Siskins Thursday night at the Stayner Memorial Arena in the opening game of the Provincial Junior Hockey League’s North Conference final.

Stayner led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 6-3 at the end of the second.

It was the first time in this year’s playoffs that the Patriots allowed more than four goals and the first time this season they’d allowed more than seven goals.

Mount Forest finished atop the Pollock Division at 31-7-0-2 and they scored a division-high 199 goals in the regular season. Stayner was first in the Carruthers Division at 40-2-0-0 and they scored 299 goals.

Jack Francis, Thomas Haffner, Ryley Cribbin and Klayton Hoelscher scored a goal apiece for Mount Forest while Blair Butchart and Klayton Hoelscher each had two assists and Derick Acheson, Brendon Aitken and Haffner had one each.

Joey Visconti and Ty Kulba tallied twice each for Stayner while single goals were netted by Lucas Jeffery, J.D. Falconer, Austin Fischer, Curtis Ballantyne and Kevin Boyd. Ballantyne assisted on three of the goals while Kyle Linney and Ben Hughes had two assists apiece and Liam Kendall, Kulba, Cameron Knowles, Fischer, Carson Gandy, Eli Gordon, Mark Dupont and Jeffery had one each.

The Siskins outshot the Patriots 51-37 and went 2-for-7 on their power play while Mount Forest went 1-for-6.

David Lobsinger was charged with the loss in net for the Patriots as he yielded eight goals on 38 shots before giving way to Aidan Quish for the final 7:46 of the game. Quish stopped 12 of 13 shots. Marcus Semiao made 33 saves to get the win for the Siskins.

Second game of the series is slated for Saturday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m.
