Patriots edge Ironmen for first in division
MOUNT FOREST – Jacob Miller’s goal with 3:17 to go in the third period gave the Mount Forest Patriots a 6-5 victory over the Wingham Ironmen to close out the Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division’s regular season Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The result leaves the Patriots and Ironmen tied for first with 65 points apiece. The Patriots finish at 32-9-1-0 and Wingham finishes at 31-8-2-1 and the teams split their regular-season series with each winning three times.
The Patriots get first place due to having more wins than Wingham. First place gives the Patriots a bye in the divisional quarter-finals.
Saturday, Wingham led 3-2 at the end of the first period and the teams were tied 4-4 at the end of the second.
The game’s first four goals were all scored on power plays as the teams combined for five power-play goals in the game. The Patriots went 3-for-5 on their power play while Wingham was 2-for-5.
Thomas Haffner scored twice for the Patriots while Jack Birkett, Michael Stefanelli, Klayton Hoelscher and Jacob Miller each scored once. Ryley Cribbin, Hoelscher and Haffner each had two assists while single assists were given to Miller, Stefanelli, Dylan Brown, Chet Philips and Brady Becker.
Wingham received goals from Corey Restoule, Kyle Stanbury, Shane Vollmer, Jamie Huber and Matt Tolton. Huber and Rhys Vollmer each had two assists and Shane Vollmer, Stanbury and Logan Tolton each had one.
Mount Forest outshot Wingham 36-35.
David Lobsinger turned aside 30 shots to get the win in the Mount Forest net. Devon Carson also had 30 saves for Wingham, but he took the loss.
Wingham will play the seventh-place Goderich Flyers in the best-of-seven Pollock quarter-finals.
The other two series played games Friday and Saturday nights.
Walkerton Hawks defeated the Hanover Barons 4-1 Friday and 7-1 Saturday for a 2-0 lead in their series. Third game is set for Tuesday at Hanover.
Mitchell Hawks and Kincardine Bulldogs are tied 1-1 after Mitchell won 2-0 Friday and Kincardine won 4-1 Saturday. Game 3 is to go Sunday afternoon at Kincardine.
