Patriots edge Kincardine with goal early in third period

MOUNT FOREST – A goal by Chet Philips in the opening minute of the third period proved to be the winner as the Mount Forest Patriots edged the Kincardine Bulldogs 4-3 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Kincardine fought back to knot the score at 3-3 by the end of the second.

The goal by Philips 26 seconds into the third period was the only goal of the final frame.

That goal was the second of the game for Philips while Ryley Cribbin scored the other two goals for the Patriots. Cribbin assisted on both of Philips’s goals while Hayden Coulter, Jack Birkett, Luke Eurig, Philips, Troy Weber and Colton Culbert each had one assist.

Bryce McFadden, Logan Freiburger and Trevor Donaldson scored the goals for Kincardine. Two of Kincardine’s goals came on unassisted efforts while Brett Burrows and Jordan Caskenette helped set up Freiburger’s goal.

The Patriots were outshot 43-36 and they went 1-for-5 on their power play while Kincardine went 1-for-4.

Mount Forest is second in the Pollock Division standings at 8-2-1-0 while Kincardine is fifth at 5-5-0-0.

Next game for the Patriots is their first of four consecutive road games as they’re to play the Walkerton Hawks at Walkerton Friday at 8:20 p.m.
