Patriots edge Walkerton to keep winning streak going

WALKERTON – Ethan Meeker’s first goal of the season kept the Mount Forest Patriots unbeaten in Provincial Junior Hockey League play this season.

Meeker scored an unassisted goal with 5:49 to go in the third period to lift the Patriots to a 4-3 win over the Walkerton Capitals Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.

The win was the 11th in as many league outings for the Patriots this season. Meeker’s goal capped a comeback for the Patriots that saw them rally from a 2-0 deficit at the end of the first period. The score was tied 2-2 after the second.

Campbell Houston (his first of the season), Elijah Brahaney and Matthew Weiler also scored for Mount Forest while Caleb Cribbin had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Cameron Lytle, Campbell Hobson, Austin Griffin and Bryan Richardson.

Sam Shakes had two goals for Walkerton while Jett Morningstar had the other one. Clayton Fitzsimmons, Shakes, Kevin Perrott, Eliott McCarey and Kyle Durrer each had one assist.

The Capitals outshot the Patriots 49-42 while neither team had a power-play goal, Mount Forest on three power plays and Walkerton on four.

Vance Meyer collected the win in net for the Patriots with 46 saves while Logan Bromley had 38 saves for Walkerton.

Mount Forest is one of three unbeaten teams in the entire 60-team league. The others are the Stayner Siskins with 10 wins and the Napanee Raiders with 12 wins.

The Patriots are to play the Mitchell Hawks (7-2-1-0) at the Mitchell Arena Sunday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
