Patriots erupt for late trio of goals for win
HANOVER – The Mount Forest Patriots scored three times in the final three minutes of the game as they downed the Hanover Barons 5-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at Hanover’s P and H Centre.
The win assured the Patriots of a finish in the top two in the Pollock Division.
Hanover had scored the only goal of the first period before Mount Forest responded with two goals in the final minute of the second period. The hosts tied it with a goal in the eighth minute of the third.
Ryley Cribbin’s power-play goal with three minutes to play put the Patriots ahead for good. Jack Birkett added an unassisted goal 1:25 later and Klayton Hoelscher potted an empty-netter with 42 seconds to play.
Owen Rahn and Cribbin had scored in the second period for the Patriots. Ryan Goetz, Thomas Haffner and Thomas Coulter each had an assist.
Jorden Reaman and Nathan Schwartz scored the goals for Hanover while Alex Paylor had an assist.
Mount Forest outshot Hanover 36-20, including a 30-10 margin after the first period. The Patriots also went 1-for-5 on their power play while Hanover was scoreless on four power plays.
David Lobsinger made 18 saves to get the win in the Mount Forest net while Brendon Landry had 31 saves in the loss for Hanover.
The Patriots are to host the third-place Kincardine Bulldogs (20-15-1-2) Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Kincardine can’t catch the Patriots as the Bulldogs have four games to go in their regular season and the Patriots have six to play.
