Patriots fall on home ice to Wingham

MOUNT FOREST – The Wingham Ironmen struck for the final three goals of the game to down the Mount Forest Patriots 4-1 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The loss was the second consecutive loss on home ice for the Patriots as they had been edged in overtime by the Mitchell Hawks a week earlier. However, they did outlast the Walkerton Hawks 6-5 at Walkerton Friday night.

Saturday, penalties hurt the Patriots as they surrendered a pair of power play goals and gave Wingham 11 power plays in the match. Mount Forest was scoreless on six power plays.

After Wingham scored the lone goal of the first period, the hosts pulled even early in the second before the Ironmen skated to a power-play goal in the final minute of the second to go ahead for good.

Nathan Bolger scored the lone goal for the Patriots, set up by Brendon Aitken.

Carter Collinson had two goals and an assist for Wingham while Scott Stovel and Tanner Hertel also scored. Rhys Vollmer assisted on two of the goals while Kyle Langlois, Logan Tolton, Andrew Heibein and Jamie Huber had one assist apiece.

Wingham outshot Mount Forest 46-40 thanks to a 19-9 advantage in the third period when the Patriots took six minutes penalties to four for Wingham.

David Lobsinger was tagged with the loss in the Mount Forest net while Jamie Brock picked up the win for Wingham.

The loss drops the Pollock Division-leading Patriots’ record to 26-6-0-1 while fourth-place Wingham improves to 18-11-1-3. The Patriots hold a seven-point lead over second-place Walkerton.

Mount Forest has seven games left on its regular-season schedule starting with a home match against the Kincardine Bulldogs (19-10-1-3) Saturday at 8 p.m.
