Patriots force division semifinal to seven-game limit
MITCHELL – The Mount Forest Patriots forced their Provincial Junior Hockey League Pollock Division semifinal to its seven-game limit with a 4-3 victory over the Mitchell Hawks Sunday at the Mitchell arena.
Two goals in the first five minutes of the third period broke a tie and put the Patriots ahead for the first time in the game. Mitchell narrowed the gap to the final single-goal margin with a goal with just over four and a half minutes to go in regulation time.
Mitchell had led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Mount Forest scored the lone goal of the second.
Blair Butchart, Michael Stefanelli, Nathan Bolger and Ryley Cribbin collected single goals for the Patriots while assists went to Colton Culbert, Butchart, Hayden Coulter and Dawson Bolger.
Max Hall, Tyson Hall and Jake Finlayson scored for Mitchell while Josh Gottfried, Nathan Hall, Carter Lewis and Ethan Hill each had an assist.
The Patriots outshot the Hawks 44-25, including a 30-14 advantage after the first period.
Both teams were scoreless on their power plays, Mount Forest on eight and Mitchell on six.
Gleb Poliakov picked up the win in the Mount Forest net with 22 saves while Lucas Bain had 40 saves for Mitchell.
The seventh and deciding game of the series is to be played Wednesday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
Winner of Wednesday’s game is to play the Wingham Ironmen in the best-of-seven division final.
