Patriots give up first goal, but turn in triumphant rally
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots yielded the opening goal of the game before they came back for a 6-1 Provincial Junior Hockey League victory over the Walkerton Hawks Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
Connor Prins scored for Walkerton, with help from Jordan Borth, at 4:11 of the opening period.
The Patriots evened it up with just over a minute and a half to go in the period before adding two goals in the second period and three in the third, the final two coming 13 seconds apart with less than 90 seconds to go in the game.
Jack Birkett tallied twice for Mount Forest while single goals were netted by William Black, Ryley Cribbin, Dawson Bolger and Michael Stefanelli. Luke Eurig assisted on three of the goals while Cribbin and Hayden Coulter each had two assists and Riley Torrie, Stefanelli, Troy Weber, Payton McIsaac and Nathan Bolger each had one.
The Patriots peppered Walkerton goalie Mathew Donnelly with 55 shots while Mason Kameka faced 28 in the Mount Forest net.
The Patriots went 1-for-5 on their power play and they held Walkerton scoreless on three power plays.
Mount Forest (12-3-1-0) is second in the Pollock Division standings, but have two games in hand on the leading Wingham Ironmen (13-4-1-0). Walkerton is sixth at 2-14-0-1.
The Patriots are to play the seventh-place Goderich Flyers (2-15-0-0) at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
