Patriots keep Goderich’s comeback attempt grounded
MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots held off a comeback attempt by the Goderich Flyers to record a 5-3 victory in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
The Patriots scored the first three goals of the game while Goderich twice managed to get the gap down to a single goal in the final 10 minutes of the game.
The Flyers scored a pair of power-play goals to cut the gap to 3-2 with eight minutes to go before the Patriots scored a power-play goal of their own to restore a two-goal advantage.
However, Goderich scored again with just under two minutes to play to drop the gap to one goal again, but an empty-netter by Mount Forest completed the scoring with 42 seconds to go.
Michael Stefanelli hit for a pair of goals for the Patriots while Chet Philips, Dylan Brown and Jack Birkett added single goals. Jack Francis and Thomas Haffner each had two assists and Dawson Bolger, Max Davis, Parker Miller, Thomas Coulter and Philips each had one.
Matt Bean, Mitch Fisher and Trent Michie scored for Goderich with assists going to Eric Vander Eyk, Bean, Riley Conners and Noah Nurse.
The Patriots outshot the Flyers 42-37 although Goderich held a 17-9 advantage in shots in the third period.
Both teams went 2-for-6 on the power play.
David Lobsinger collected the win in net for the hosts as he made 34 saves while Jarron Thompson took the loss for Goderich. He allowed a single goal on two shots in his stint of 7:40 while Kevin Linker had 36 saves in his time in net.
The win was the second in three days for the Patriots who defeated the Mitchell Hawks 5-2 at Mitchell Wednesday.
The Patriots are second in the Pollock Division at 21-8-1-0 and they trail division-leading Wingham Ironmen (22-5-1-1) by three points. Goderich is seventh at 7-20-1-3.
The Patriots are to host the fifth-place Hanover Barons (10-16-1-2) Saturday at 8 p.m. in their final pre-Christmas game.
Mount Forest has two games on its schedule next weekend as the Patriots are to play the sixth-place Walkerton Hawks (7-17-3-3) at Walkerton Dec. 28 and host Wingham Dec. 29.
